About us

The Solving Plastic Waste CRC was established on 1 July 2024 as a 10-year cooperative research centre, to assist in solving Australia’s plastic waste problem by enhancing end-user driven research collaboration which addresses the current challenges across the entire plastics value chain.

The Minister for Industry and Science in 2023, the Honourable Ed Husic, confirmed the Solving Plastic Waste CRC, one of two successful CRC applicants to be funded in the 24th selection round of the CRC Program, would be established with $40 million in federal funding. This grant, in addition to our Partner cash and in-kind contributions, means total resources available to the Solving Plastic Waste CRC will exceed $120 million over the 10-year period from 2024 to 2034.

Mission

The Solving Plastic Waste CRC’s mission is to assist our partners in pioneering innovative solutions to the plastic waste problem and to help foster a sustainable circular economy for plastics in Australia.  We will ensure that focused, industry-driven collaboration between the research sector, governments and the entire plastics value chain is effectively enabled over the next decade to transform the way plastic products are designed, manufactured, used, recovered and recycled, and how microplastic soil pollution is remediated.   We will be targeted, yet ambitious, in the training we provide our researchers, partners and the wider community through our Microcredential program.

Vision

Our vision at the Solving Plastic Waste CRC is to be a trusted source of evidence-based information for our partners, the plastics value chain and the wider community and to deliver groundbreaking solutions that transform the lifecycle of plastics. We envision a future where the amount of plastic being sustainably recycled and repurposed increases while the amount of plastic going to landfill decreases, with Australia moving progressively towards a circular economy for plastics.

Partners

Our partners in the CRC span the entire plastics value chain and include: plastic manufacturers, plastic processors, recycling companies, consultants, public good organisations, relevant industry associations, local councils and state government departments.
