Microcredential Overview

This introductory microcredential provides you with foundational knowledge for understanding plastics, their classifications and the environmental claims associated with them.

The microcredential introduces you to the basic classification of plastics, including major polymer families commonly used in products and packaging, and the identification codes associated with these materials. You will learn how plastics are identified in practice and how different environmental claims relate to material composition, material behaviour and the waste management systems required to support them.

The microcredential also introduces the broader regulatory and labelling landscape relevant to plastics and packaging, focusing primarily on the Australian context while highlighting key international frameworks and standards. Through examples and short case exercises, you will explore how environmental claims can be interpreted and how system conditions influence whether such claims are meaningful in practice.

Course topics

  1. What is a Plastic?
  2. Identification Codes and Labelling in Practice
  3. Environmental Claims – Types and Hierarchy
  4. From Material to Australian Infrastructure: Why Context Matters
  5. Regulatory, Standards & Compliance Context
  6. Putting it all Together: Evaluating Environmental Claims.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the basic structure and classification of plastics, including major polymer families used in common products and packaging
  2. Understand how plastics are identified in practice, including the purpose and limitations of resin identification codes
  3. Distinguish between different types of environmental claims associated with plastics, including claims relating to material composition, material behaviour and waste management systems
  4. Interpret common plastics terminology such as recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and recycled content
  5. Recognise the role of regulatory frameworks, standards and packaging labelling systems in supporting or substantiating environmental claims
  6. Review environmental claims about plastics within their broader system context, considering factors such as infrastructure availability, waste management pathways and material characteristics.
