Microcredential Overview

The Fundamentals of Microplastics Microcredential introduces microplastics—tiny plastic particles that have become a pressing global concern.

You will explore the sources and pathways through which microplastics enter the environment, assess their impact on ecosystems and human health, and examine current and emerging solutions.

Throughout the microcredential you will explore case studies, readings and access the latest information to gain a broad understanding of the scientific, environmental, and societal dimensions of microplastic pollution.

Course topics

  1. Introduction to Microplastics
  2. Sources and Pathways
  3. Environmental and Health Impacts
  4. Solutions and Innovations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Define microplastics and distinguish between types
  2. Identify major sources and pathways into the environment
  3. Understand ecological and human health implications
  4. Explore current mitigation strategies and policies
  5. Reflect on their personal and organisational impact.

Meet Your Presenter

Dr Scott Wilson

Senior Research Fellow, RMIT University and SPW CRC | Research Director, Australian Microplastic Assessment Project (AUSMAP), Total Environment Centre

Scott has over 25 years of research experience as an ecotoxicologist working both nationally and internationally on a range of water-related contaminants. He works closely with industry and government on practical solutions to environmental problems and feels strongly about engaging the community and involving them in the problem-solving.

The Australian Microplastic Assessment Project (AUSMAP) is a nationwide citizen science programme collecting microplastic data and educating the community on plastic pollution and sustainable alternatives.
